Hairdressing is an exciting career that exposes you to a wide range of clients, and can be a good source of income if you do it correctly. The following are the steps you should take if you want to pursue a career as a hairdresser.
Find a School at Which to Get Certification
You need to go to a beauty school in order to get certification to practice. If you are in Australia, you will be required to have a certificate before being allowed to do hairdressing professionally.
But be sure to do your due diligence to find the right school so that you can be sure the certificate you are getting is valid. Some of the things you will learn at hairdressing school are:
- Customer care and handling bookings
- Hair types and how to care for them
- Handling chemicals
- Diagnosing hair and scalp conditions and giving recommendations for treatment
- Cutting, colouring, and planting hair, among others
Do an Apprenticeship
Once you have received your certificate and you are confident that you can do hairdressing, you should look for an apprenticeship opportunity with a view to getting some hands-on experience under the guidance of a professional hairdresser.
They will instruct you and help you learn to meet customers’ needs until you are well-trained enough to do it yourself. Once you have finished the apprenticeship, you can think about striking out on your own.
Open Your Own Business
This is the exciting part, but you will only get there with determination. If you are not ready to open your own hairdressing business, you can seek a position as an assistant hairdresser at a busy salon.
There is no set timetable on how long it should take you to open your own salon, but for most people in the hairdressing industry, running one’s own business is a dream come true.
