This unit includes an in-depth analysis of the various services offered by salons, including professional consultation, make-up services and retail expectations. You will learn to identify management types and associated skills required to manage this diversity.

In this unit you will research a variety of strategies for promoting a Hairdressing business. You will have an in-depth look at the current popular services of colour and texture to perform some promotions. Promoting a small business, such as a salon involves ‘thinking outside the square’.

Building on `Lead and Manage a Successful Team’ (DB01), you will research management theories and determine appropriate styles of management for salons. You will, again, look at the services offered to be able to understand the requirements of clients, and the staff in the salon, in an effort to determine appropriate management styles which are not in isolation to the culture of the business.

This unit looks at the expectations of the clients and the staff to be able to successfully manage the service and operations of the salon. You will determine stock and operational requirements by analysing the level of service in a variety of areas of operation.

By studying the creative aspects of Hairdressing as well as marketing theories and practices, you will be able to determine points of difference to other small businesses. With this understanding of the marketing needs of the business you will be well on the way to developing a marketing plan that improves business on a reasonable budget.

Business planning is the key to success. Failed businesses are a direct result of a lack of planning. You will learn the elements of business planning, applying them to salon business. This unit prepares the foundations of your business, all other units link to your business plan. You will learn how to develop, monitor and amend your business plan.
